THUGWork Theatre

Thumbs Up Good Work Theatre (THUGWork Theatre) is a tiny theatre group created by sibling duo Caleigh (B.A. Drama B.Ed.) and Colin Dingwall (B.F.A. Drama Performance). We started two years ago as a name to do a fringe show we wrote and performed together (Grow Up) and it has become something else. A group of young artists that want to tell our own stories our own way. We are young, we are new, we might still be finding our feet as we run forward shouting into the abyss: here we are.
And here you are, with us.
Caleigh Dingwall is an educator and theatre practitioner based in Calgary. After completing her Bachelor of Arts (Drama) and Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta, Caleigh has spent her time travelling and teaching in Europe, before moving back to Canada to work with her brother on their theatre company, Thumbs Up Good Work Theatre. She is excited to be working in a non-traditional theatre space and even more pleased to be performing in a hometown landmark like the Calgary Tower.
Colin Dingwall is an emerging actor/theatre creator based out of southern Alberta, he is a recent (October 2014) graduate of the University of Lethbridge where he earned his B.F.A. in Drama Performance. While Colin currently calls Calgary home, since graduating from the U of L he has been doing work all over Alberta and Saskatchewan. Colin is primarily trained as an actor but has been making forays into playwrighting and directing, primarily through THUGWork Theatre. Other artistic endeavours include baking and gardening.

These Three

Keshia Cheesman, Vanessa Jetté and Bianca Miranda were drawn to each other in their first year of university because of their great passion for life, laughter, art and flavourful food. Because of their bond and infectious energy, they were dubbed the name “These Three” which stuck with them ever since. They have recently finished their third year at the University of Calgary as drama majors and have since worked together continuously from a scene from Women of Manhattan by John Patrick Shanley to Song of Myself (Taking Flight Festival 2014), Cell Block Tango and performance creation and acting classes. They have also wanted to continuously work collaboratively to create diverse theatre that is inspired by their own experiences and observations of the world at present.
They have also succeeded individually – you may have seen Keshia in The Real Inspector Hound (Inspector Hound), Aesop’s Fables (Ensemble), Storybook Theatre’s Hairspray (Little Inez), Vanessa in The Real Inspector Hound (Moon), Man Equals Man (Widow Begbick), Wagonstage’s High Water Heroes (Ensemble) and Bianca in Bloody Poetry (Harriet Westbrook), The Shakespeare Company’s DiVerseCityyc (Lady Macbeth, Celia, Portia, Jailer’s Daughter) and Measure for Measure (Varrius).
Lastly, they would like to extend their gratitude to their mentors – to Mike Czuba, without whom they wouldn’t have found the curiosity for creation, to their acting coaches – Val Campbell, Dawn McCaugherty and Brian Smith who have continuously encouraged them to strive for authenticity in their work, and of course a huge thanks to Swallow-a-Bicycle for this awesome opportunity!
